Best plans for Christmas 2024 in Barcelona

05/12/2024

Christmas is just around the corner, and Barcelona is transforming into a place full of charm and tradition. Streets and buildings are lit up with hundreds of lights, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that invites you to stroll and enjoy.

This is a special time in the city, featuring Christmas markets, nativity scenes, live music, and activities that reflect the deeply rooted traditions of the season. Starting in late November with the official lighting of the holiday decorations, Barcelona offers a variety of options for those looking to soak up the Christmas spirit.

In this article, we present some of the best ideas to make the most of the holiday season in the city. From classic activities to more unique options, you’ll find suggestions to suit all tastes. Discover what Barcelona has in store and get ready to celebrate the season!

1. Experience Barcelona’s Christmas lights behind the wheel of a supercar

With the arrival of Christmas in Barcelona, the city transforms into a dazzling spectacle of lights and colors that invites you to wander its streets. This year, in addition to the iconic light displays along La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, Passeig de Sant Joan joins the festivities, spreading its magic from Travessera de Gràcia to the Arc de Triomf and the Ciutadella Park. The light schedule has also been extended: from Sunday to Thursday, enjoy the lights from 5:30 PM to 1:00 AM, and on weekends and special dates like December 24, 31, and January 5, they’ll shine until 2:00 AM.

What if you could make this experience even more special? This festive season, Drive Me Barcelona offers you the chance to drive through the city in a luxury Porsche supercar. With their exclusive 50% holiday discount, you can feel the thrill of steering a high-performance car while soaking in Barcelona’s magical Christmas atmosphere.

2. Visit the Port Vell Christmas fair

From November 29, 2024, to January 6, 2025, the Moll de la Fusta (Bosch i Alsina wharf) transforms into the stage for the Nadal al Port fair. In its sixth edition, titled El Nadal més salat (The Saltiest Christmas), the fair pays homage to the sea with decorations in blue tones and lighting designed to mimic the movement of waves.

Classic attractions, such as the giant Ferris wheel and an expanded ice rink, return to delight visitors of all ages. These are complemented by highlights like the illuminated cable car and the charming Christmas train.

This year introduces two spectacular new light shows: a projection in blue hues on the Portal de la Pau building and a new lighting installation along Moll de la Fusta, where 50 trees will be adorned with LED lights to create a magical seaside promenade. This fair is the perfect spot to bask in the Christmas spirit in a charming maritime setting.

3. Witness the spectacular modernist Christmas light show at Sant Pau

From November 21, 2024, to January 12, 2025, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site will transform into a magical setting for the fourth edition of Les Llums de Sant Pau. This event turns one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks into an extraordinary display of light and color.

This year’s edition offers a completely revamped experience. An interactive journey will take you through Christmas traditions from various cultures, transporting you to different corners of the world via light and artistic design. Featuring over 20 luminous installations, the show blends stunning visuals with interactive elements, connecting you to the symbols and customs that make Christmas a universal celebration.

It’s a unique opportunity to experience the magic of Christmas in a historical and artistic architectural gem that will captivate both adults and children alike.

4. Indulge in the most traditional Christmas treat

One of the best ways to warm up during winter is by savoring a steaming cup of hot chocolate paired with crispy, delicious churros. This tradition, deeply rooted in Catalan culture, is one of the greatest joys of the Christmas season. If you love this classic treat, here’s a selection of Barcelona’s top chocolate shops and churros shops to delight your taste buds with the timeless flavors of Christmas:

– Churrería Manuel San Román: A Barcelona staple since 1968, this churros shop is synonymous with quality. From classic sugar-coated churros to irresistible chocolate-dipped varieties, it offers the best of tradition. Located in Ciutat Vella, at Carrer Banys Nous, 8.

– La Selecta de Churros: Formerly known as Churrería Sagrada Familia, this family-run establishment first opened its doors in 1950 and has preserved tradition and quality ever since. Here, you can enjoy everything from classic churros with chocolate to irresistible churros filled with pastry cream, dulce de leche, and a variety of other flavors. Located in the heart of L’Eixample, you’ll find it at Plaça Sagrada Família, 26.

– Churrería Trébol: If you’re looking for authenticity, this is the place to be. Famous for its classic atmosphere and irresistible churros, Churrería Trébol welcomes you any time of the day—or night! On Saturdays, it’s open 24 hours. Visit it in Gràcia, at Carrer Còrsega, 341.

5. Explore the Christmas Markets and Fairs

At Christmas, Barcelona fills with markets that, with their unique charm, transform the city into a festive celebration space. There are two main types of Christmas markets in the city: the historic ones, some with over 200 years of tradition, and the modern “pop-up markets” that have become more popular in recent years. Both offer a festive atmosphere that reflects the Christmas spirit, but each has its own character.

The oldest and most traditional Christmas markets in Barcelona are three: the Fira de Santa Llúcia, the best-known, held next to the Cathedral since 1786; the Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família, located around the iconic basilica; and the Fira de Reis de la Gran Via, stretching along the famous avenue, offering a wide variety of products.

These markets open for several weeks, with the Fira de Santa Llúcia and Fira de la Sagrada Família starting in late November, while the Fira de Reis usually opens a bit later and runs until the eve of Three Kings’ Day. Although each market has its own schedule, their dates often overlap in the days leading up to Christmas, creating a unique celebratory atmosphere.

As for the products, Barcelona’s traditional Christmas markets share many similarities, though with some differences. At the older ones, such as Fira de Santa Llúcia and Fira de la Sagrada Família, you’ll find a wide variety of Christmas trees, festive decorations, and traditional nativity scenes, with figures and accessories to customize your own nativity. They also sell gift items, many of them handmade or artisanal.

On the other hand, the Fira de Reis de la Gran Via is more focused on children, offering a wide selection of toys and gifts, as well as products for celebrating Three Kings’ Day. And of course, there are the traditional candy stalls and classic churros shops, offering a tempting break to recharge while soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Make the Most of Christmas in Barcelona!

Barcelona is filled with magic during the Christmas season, offering a wealth of activities for all tastes. From touring the city admiring the Christmas lights in a supercar, to immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere of the Port Vell fair or marveling at the modernist light show at Sant Pau. For those who love tradition, you’ll find delicious churros with hot chocolate at the best churros shops, as well as charming Christmas markets to experience the essence of the season. Without a doubt, Barcelona offers a wide range of activities to fully enjoy Christmas 2024.
